they have the dark in them.
they take a walk because they can't stand it.
the dark inside and the lamps in their rooms.
the sharp headaches,
even with all the lights out.
the hollow feeling of removal.
they walk outside in the dark alone together and become the night so they can all sleep.
they've learned not to trust their senses.
when one of them thinks he hears deer screaming in headlights, or a woman laughing, or his father calling for him, they remind him it's just the dark playing tricks again.
they think they'll shatter if ever touched, so they trust and love only the dark.
you know you've seen them in dreams, these lonely walking people with dark insides, moving through a medium you couldn't accurately describe to someone who hadn't already seen it.
darker than the night itself. thicker than blood.
floating and sinking, the dark medium is everywhere at once, around and within the walking people, like water surrounding still cubes of ice.
the dark is a soft, warm pressure.
they walk always two meters apart.
they don't use flashlights, and they carry long black pipes and breathe black smoke.
it helps them sleep
the smoking.
the walking.
they don't talk much, but one of them always feels the need to say "what a nice night."
